Johannesburg – A Gauteng police officer, his wife, and their two children were shot dead on Tuesday evening, police said.

The 40-year-old police constable and his family were gunned down in their home in Makau near Ga-Rankuwa in Pretoria, police spokesperson Brigadier Sabatha Mokgwabone told News24 on Wednesday.

The suspects fled the scene in the officer’s vehicle, which was later found abandoned in another section of the village, Mokgwabone said.

The family members were declared dead on scene.

The officer's children were aged 3 and 22.

Police were withholding their names until all family members had been notified.

The constable was stationed at the Hebron police station, he said.

No arrests had yet been made.

The motive for the shooting was unknown.
