The Gauteng education department has received well over 450 000 online applications for 2020 admissions for Grade 1 and Grade 8 pupils in two weeks.

Department spokesperson Steve Mabona said it was encouraging that, to date, they have processed 459 608 applications.

For Grade 1 pupils, the department received 211 584 applications, and 248 024 applications were received for Grade 8.

"These figures simply indicate that we probably have about 100 000 spaces remaining at our schools, for both grade 1 and 8, respectively," Mabona said.

"We, wish to reiterate that parents need not panic as the departmental technicians are working tirelessly on rectifying the WA4 reference numbers received by some parents who reside closer to schools, instead of them receiving WA1. No parent will be disadvantaged."

He continued that schools that have received over 1 000 applications include: Alberton High School, Northcliff High School, Boksburg High School, Hoërskool Akasia, Sir John Adamson High School, Rand Park High School, Hoërskool President, Mondeor High School, Hoërskool Gerrit Maritz, Pretoria High School For Girls, Hoërskool Langenhoven, Benoni High School, Edenvale High School, Germiston High School, Laerskool Akasia, Glenvista High School, Hoërskool Suiderlig, Jeppe High School for Girls, Greenside High School, Parktown High School for Girls, Willowmoore High School, The Glen High School, Hoërskool Birchleigh, Phumlani Secondary School, Edenglen High School, Lenasia Secondary School, Sunward Park High School, Parktown High School for Boys, Bryanston High School, Hoërskool Monument, Roosevelt High School, Pretoria High School for Boys, Sutherland High School, Laerskool Theresapark and Jeppe High School for Boys.

Submit necessary documents

Parents are reminded to submit the necessary documents to schools, within seven working days, after applying. Schools must not compel parents to fill in administrative forms, or require some supporting documents before accepting their documents, during the application period.Mabona said the system for the admissions applications for Grade 1 and 8 will close at midnight on July 22.

The placement period will be from August 30 to September 30.

"Any parent who lacks access to the internet or requires face-to-face assistance should visit one of our walk-in centres, all public ordinary schools and identified community libraries for applications."

He said parents of Grade R pupils must apply online for Grade 1. For Grades 2 to 7 and Grade 9 to 11, parents should apply at the school.

"We appeal to parents to apply online and apply on time. Once more, we are humbled by the overwhelming positive response from parents and promise to do everything possible to make the experience problem free," he said.
