A 58-year-old man, who allegedly threatened to assassinate senior government officials and stalked Hawks officers, has been arrested for conspiracy to commit murder and intimidation.

According to a statement by the Hawks, the man was arrested on Thursday for incidents he was involved  last month.

Hawks spokesperson Colonel Katlego Mogale said the man had stalked certain members of the Hawks, sending threatening messages and death threats.

"He also threatened to assassinate senior government officials, accusing them of lying about the existence of the Covid-19 pandemic in South Africa," Mogale said.

"He also claimed to be responsible for the death of two [Directorate of Priority Crimes Investigation] members in Mahikeng recently during a standoff with cash-in-transit robbers."

Mogale said an investigation that had been ongoing for several weeks finally led to the apprehension of the suspect, who was at his girlfriend’s residence in Ratanda.

The man was expected to appear in the Germiston Magistrate's Court on Monday on charges of conspiracy to committed murder and intimidation.

Mogale said further charges could be added to the docket.
