Cape Town - A 43-year-old man is expected in the George Magistrate’s Court on Monday for the murder of a 60-year-old woman who was beaten to death with a golf club in the coastal town on Saturday.

Police spokesperson Captain Malcolm Pojie told News24 the woman was declared dead at the scene after emergency services arrived at Formosa Drive, Groeneweide Park just before 14:00.

She had been sitting on the pavement with a friend, taking a break to eat as they made their way home from town to a nearby settlement.

"According to witnesses, a bakkie had approached and the passenger got out. The man then allegedly started attacking the woman with the club without any warning or words," Pojjie said.

They then drove off.

It is believed that the woman died of head injuries.

The suspect was arrested a short while later at a nearby pig farm.

It is understood that the accused and the woman’s husband are acquainted and that the two had been involved in an altercation earlier, Pojie said.

"However, the motive is still being investigated," he said.

A post mortem will be conducted later this week to confirm the cause of death.
