Johannesburg – A 15-year-old girl survived after she was attacked and shot nine times by a group of men at their home in Driefontein, in Muldersdrift, police said on Thursday.

Police spokesperson Captain Appel Ernst said the girl was home alone when a group of men broke into their house at around 22:00 on Tuesday evening.

"When she allegedly screamed, the suspects opened fire on her. She was hit approximately nine times in the upper body, leg and arm," Ernst said.

The men ransacked the house and left.

Ernst could not confirm reports of a "nyaope gang" operating in the area.

"There are rumours about a 'gang' who is operating in the area, but no conclusive evidence could be found regarding these unsubstantiated allegations."
