Cape Town - The body of a three-year-old girl was found in a burnt shack in Langa on Wednesday evening.

City of Cape Town fire services responded to a blaze in Phaphu Street at 17:45.

"One informal structure was destroyed by the fire. One [girl] sustained fatal burns and four persons were displaced," spokesperson Theo Lane confirmed.

The cause of the fire had not yet been determined.

Police spokesperson Captain FC Van Wyk said an inquest docket had been opened and the circumstances surrounding the girl's death were being investigated.

The little girl was the second child to die in a shack fire on Wednesday.

Earlier that morning, the body of a 12-year-old boy was found in a Delft shack.
