Cape Town - An angry mother has claimed her 4-year-old daughter was initially turned away by Paarl Hospital after she was raped last week, a report has said.

The mother told the Cape Times her daughter was raped last Tuesday, but on visiting the hospital, was told she must bring her child back to the hospital the following day.

The hospital representative allegedly told the mother that because there was “no bleeding and her underwear was gone”, they should rather come back the next day.

The mom was concerned that vital evidence would be lost because her child was not examined promptly, and could not wash her for fear of tampering with evidence the police may have needed to apprehend the suspect.

Provincial Department of Health spokesperson Mark van der Heever told the daily the department had apologised for the “regrettable incident”.

Van der Heever said it was not departmental policy to turn away anyone in need of medical assistance and would contact the mother to assist the department in identifying the person who had turned them away.

Community 'very angry'

A 28-year-old was arrested in the Paarl East area last Tuesday, News24 reported.

“The suspect appeared in the Paarl Magistrate’s Court last week on a charge of rape. This office can confirm that the suspect was assaulted by the community,” Captain FC van Wyk said in a statement.

Local councillor Joseph Mathee said residents assaulted the suspect shortly after they heard of the incident.

"That's when the police came and arrested him. The community was very angry," he said.

Mathee said a relative of the girl said she was raped at the suspect's house. He was believed to be a relative.

"This is very upsetting. Children are a gift from God and should be protected."
