Cape Town - Residents of Bokmakierie on Tuesday came out in their numbers to attend the funeral of a little girl who was shot and killed while visiting her father.

The 6-year-old, identified as Saadiqah Lippert, was hit by a bullet after she stepped out of the Bokmakierie home on Monday night.

Police spokesperson Constable Noloyiso Rwexana that confirmed the child had later died in hospital.

Athlone Community Police Forum chairperson Aziza Kannemeyer was among the mourners who attended Lippert’s funeral on Tuesday afternoon.

"The community is upset and are demanding that action be taken," she said. "This was a senseless killing."

The last five months have been relatively quiet in terms of gang-related shootings, she said, and locals were panicking that the gunfire would return.

Kannemeyer said residents identified two men believed to be behind the little girl’s murder, and they had since been taken in by police for questioning.

"But the sad thing is that no arrest will bring back this child," she said.
