Cape Town - A little girl burnt to death in Athlone in the early hours of Monday morning when a Wendy house she shared with her parents went up in flames while she was locked inside.

City of Cape Town fire services spokesperson Theo Layne said 12 firefighters battled the blaze after responding to the scene in Shaanti Crescent, Gatesville, at 01:00.

The 7-year-old had been locked inside the house while her father went to pick her mother up from work.

It took firefighters an hour to extinguish the flames.

The child's body was found inside the wooden structure.

Layne said the matter had been handed over to police for further investigation.
