Cape Town - A group of Kuils River residents want the City of Cape Town to give them land for a housing project they say they have designed for themselves.

“Throw away the housing list, give us land,” a group of about 50 people chanted during the picket they held outside the city's Civic Centre on Tuesday.

Matys Markgraft, chairperson of the Community Habitat Housing Support Group, explained that about 395 people had developed a sustainable housing project for Kuils River and had been asking the city for a piece of land to build it on since 2005.

They had designed the kind of housing they wanted, and secured international funders to back the project.

“All we need now is land,” he said, as protesters chanted and police watched from the steps of the Civic Centre.

“Some people here have waited 20 years for a house,” said a frustrated Markgraft.

He said the group would hand over a memorandum with this demand to the city's mayor Patricia de Lille, the province's Premier Helen Zille, and the Public Protector.

Comment on the matter was not immediately available from the City of Cape Town.
