King William's Town - A 76-year-old woman was shot dead in front of her four granddaughters in Ngcisininde village, Ngqamakhwe, Eastern Cape police said on Wednesday.

Captain Jackson Manatha said the woman and the girls were watching television when they heard a knock on the door on Tuesday night. When one of the girls went to open up, two armed men entered and asked for the woman's grandson.

They replied that they did not know where he was. One of the men then shot the elderly woman in her upper body. She died on the scene.

After the men left and locked the door, a 15-year-old granddaughter crawled out of a window and ran to inform the neighbours.

Manatha could not immediately provide the ages of the other three girls. He said it was possible they were younger than 15.

No arrests had yet been made.
