WATCH: Good Samaritan cop shot four times

The Ipid is investigating a shooting in Virginia, Free State yesterday. One police officer is in hospital in a stable condition following the incident. A suspect was declared dead on the scene. WATCH

Bloemfontein – A Free State police officer is recovering in hospital after he was shot while responding to a family dispute in Virginia on Sunday morning, police said.    

Constable Arno Cronje was shot four times in the hand and legs when he tried to help a couple involved in an argument, police spokesperson Lieutenant Malebo Khosana said on Tuesday.  

After the argument the woman went to the local police station. The officer accompanied her back home. Her husband was sitting in his car with a gun.

A shoot-out ensued between the man and Cronje when he refused to surrender his firearm.

The husband, Mojalefa Khansi, 49, was shot in the head. He died on the scene. Their teenage daughter witnessed the shooting.

A case of murder and attempted murder was opened.
