Johannesburg - Government says it's happy with the 20-year prison sentence handed down to former Jozi FM DJ Donald Sebolai in the Johannesburg High Court sitting in Palm Ridge on Friday.

Cabinet spokesperson Phumla Williams said the sentence matches the seriousness of the crime.

Sebolai was convicted in October 2015 of murdering his girlfriend Rachel “Dolly” Tshabalala.

Williams said too many women die at the hands of their partners.

“As government, we are doing all we can to ensure that this comes to an end.”

Williams said the sentence “serves as a deterrent to other perpetrators and it is a clear demonstration that the law will take its course in ensuring that those who commit crimes are brought to book”.

Judge Cassim Moosa said on Friday that Sebolai "is more regretful than remorseful".

Tshabalala was found in a pool of blood in Sebolai's bed in June 2014. She had suffered a single stab wound to the pelvic area.
