Govt will ensure minimal municipal job losses - Van Rooyen

Johannesburg - Government will make every effort to ensure minimal job losses in its reconfiguration of some municipalities, Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister Des van Rooyen said on Tuesday.

"The Municipal Demarcation Board has finalised the redetermination of boundaries and reconfiguration of several municipalities to improve efficiency," he told the Independent Municipal and Allied Trade Union's (IMATU) 5th national congress in Boksburg.

The process would be guided by the applicable labour legislation.

He urged IMATU members to work with established structures that were busy with the process. Its success hinged on well-established forums set up in all municipalities.

"It is anticipated that this process will hold councils and management of municipalities accountable," Van Rooyen said.

The reconfiguration and redetermination of boundaries was being done ahead of this year's local government elections.

Van Rooyen told News24 on the sidelines of the congress that he had communicated the same message to the SA Municipal Workers Union.

Both unions were part of the transitional committees, whose role it was to deal with issues affecting redemarcated municipalities.

"The conclusion of those processes is very important for the sake of the new municipal councils which will be coming after elections," said Van Rooyen.

A date for the municipal elections had not been announced yet.

"These are some of the things that we need to confirm that they are okay, and in due course the date will be proclaimed," Van Rooyen said.
