Cape Town – A man who terrorised and raped a 14-year-old he knew in broad daylight was sentenced to an effective 25 years in prison by the Western Cape High Court on Wednesday.Pakiso Panyana, 22 at the time, targeted the teen girl while he was at a park leading to the cemetery in Grabouw on July 11 last year. She cannot be named.Wielding a screwdriver, he grabbed her and robbed her of R20. He then pulled her to a bush where he demanded to have sex with her. She refused and he raped her twice, inflicting grievous bodily harm.He stabbed her once in the neck with a screwdriver, tied an electric cord around her neck and hands, and threw rocks at her face. Her arm and head were injured. He was convinced that she was dead when he left her because she was bleeding from the mouth and was lying still.Panyana admitted that he intended to kill her, as he was aware that she knew him and would report him to police. The girl was in hospital for a month and had to attend further consultations after being discharged. She had, however, fully recovered from the physical injuries and was apparently doing fairly well in school.Panyana entered a plea and sentence agreement with the State, which was finalised in the court on Wednesday. He was sentenced to 12 years in jail for robbery, five years for kidnapping, 25 years for the rapes and 10 years for the attempted murder. The sentences would run concurrently. The victim, her family and the investigating officer were all consulted on the agreement beforehand. The court took into account that he had left school in Grade 10, confessed immediately after his arrest, pleaded guilty, co-operated fully with police, and was still young. He would have to serve at least 15 years before he had an option of parole. The court also added his name to the national register for sex offenders.
