Cape Town – A police constable accused of blackmailing a dentist appeared in the Grabouw Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

The 38-year-old officer was arrested with his 15-year-old niece in a sting operation by the Hawks on Thursday.

The off-duty policeman allegedly approached a dentist, purporting to be investigating apparent false claims submitted to a medical aid, Western Cape Hawks spokesperson Captain Lloyd Ramovha said.

He said the constable allegedly demanded R50 000 from the dentist.

The man and his niece were arrested outside the dentist’s practice after the money was handed over in an undercover operation.

Ramovha said the cash was recovered from the handbag in the teenager’s possession.

The constable was "visibly shocked" after his arrest and had to be treated for heart-attack-like symptoms.

National Prosecuting Authority regional spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila said he was treated at a Somerset West hospital, and later held in nearby holding cells.

He said bail was set at R15 000 when he appeared in court for corruption and extortion on Monday.

He would return to court on January 30 next year.

The juvenile was released into the care of her mother, who was the man's sister and also a police official.

The teenager would appear in court on Tuesday.
