Cape Town - It’s back to school day, and South Africans on social media have taken the time to reminisce on their favourite memories from their first day of school.

Twitter and Facebook users took to sharing their funniest memories, frightful moments and humorous interactions, with “Grade 1" trending at number 3 on Twitter at the time of writing.

“My 1st day at school (Grade 1) I didn't cry, I was too excited ‘cause I thought I had made it in life. Like realllyy made it #backtoschool,” said Twitter user @Nampree.

“Every single year on Back To School day I think of my first day when I cried and cried and held on tight to my mother and refused to let her go.

"I was convinced if I held on tight enough she'd say we could go home. That plan failed,” posted Lauren Hess on Facebook.

Another Twitter user, Big Boss, may have luckily escaped being charged with animal cruelty, had his teacher’s dog not gotten its own back.

“I didn’t even cry in Grade 1. In fact on my first day, I kicked my teacher’s sausage dog on the stomach. I still have a scar on my forehead from Grade 1 from when [the] dog chased me and I ran into a closed sliding door,” said Big Boss.

And another reminisced on the attractive members of the opposite sex he met all those years ago.

“My Grade 1 crush is STILL a flame. She looked Portuguese mchana. Her curve game is on point till this day,” said Twitter user @Mfezeko.
