King William's Town - A grandmother, 70, and her two grandchildren - an 11-year-old boy and a 9-year-old girl - died in a fire in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Captain Jackson Manatha said in a statement that their neighbours saw flames coming from their house at Matolweni Locality, Nqadu Village, Willowvale. The incident happened at about 05:00.

"They tried to enter but the gate was locked. They finally pushed the gate open," said Manatha, but the woman and the children were already dead.

An electrical fault is suspected to be the cause of the fire.

An inquest docket has been opened for further investigation.

The identities of the deceased were being withheld until their next of kin had been informed.
