Pietermaritzburg - An interfaith prayer for rain hosted by children’s charity Phelezela at the Pietermaritzburg City Hall on Wednesday night appeared to have been immediately answered as rain poured during the event.

The prayer was well attended by members of the Hindu, Christian, Shembe and Islamic faiths.

After a warm welcome from Dr May Mkhize, wife of ANC treasurer Zweli Mkhize, children from Phelezela took to the stage with lit candles and sang for rain, in a touching bid for relief from the crippling drought affecting KwaZulu-Natal.

The former provincial first lady said the turnout for the prayer had been good and that on her drive from Pietermaritzburg to Durban, she was grateful and amazed to see that the prayers had not gone unanswered.

Advocate Ranjiv Nirghin told the gathering that although there had been rain, more was needed to save the province from the drought.
