Johannesburg - An alleged runaway house robber died a gruesome death after he became impaled on a palisade fence in Southdale, Johannesburg, police said on Sunday.

"He got stuck and died immediately," said Captain Mavela Masondo.

"He was fleeing from a housebreaking scene."

The man's body was discovered at about 04:00 on Sunday, two houses down from where a burglary had taken place.

"[It] was found hanging on a palisade… Next to him we found a television set and two jackets."

These were items believed to have been taken from the burgled house.

Masonda said that police had opened an inquest, as well as a case of house robbery to determine if others were involved in the break-in.
