Pietermaritzburg - A battle between a security guard and armed robbers resulted in two men who tried to break into a Howick business being shot.

One of the men was shot in both legs and the other in the stomach. They were taken to hospital in police custody.

It is believed a gang of six or seven men arrived in a small bakkie and approached a security guard patrolling Family Store in the Howick CBD on Sunday night.

The men apparently asked the guard to call the owner and ask that he come to the premises. The owner, who lives inside the shop, became suspicious and pressed the panic button.

With the alarm being activated, the gang dispersed, some escaping in the vehicle and others fleeing on foot.

Berg Protection Services branch security manager Riaan du Preez said a guard was immediately dispatched and soon came face to face with gang members hiding nearby.

Du Preez said his guard was confronted by three men armed with a screwdriver, hammer and crowbar — common housebreaking implements.

“They screamed and shouted at my guard and approached him threateningly, saying they were going to attack him.”

The guard fired two warning shots, but the men were not deterred.

As they neared him, one man was shot in the legs and the other in the stomach. The third fled.

However, Pietermaritzburg police spokesperson Captain Gay Ebrahim said gunfire was exchanged between the guard and the alleged robbers.

“There was gunfire exchanged and one man was shot in the leg and the other in the thigh. Both were arrested and the hunt is on for the remaining robbers. A 9mm pistol and a shotgun were recovered,” Ebrahim said.
