Pietermaritzburg - A police hostage negotiator had to help his colleagues placate a hysterical gun-wielding woman in Scottsville on Thursday afternoon.

The woman, shouting at passersby from her Carbis Road home window while pointing a firearm, had to be taken to hospital for medical care.

A police source said the woman shouted out: “Nobody must come into my house.”

Officers in a police van who happened to be passing by, spotted pedestrians fleeing on the roadside and, upon confronting the woman, believed she was holding someone hostage.

According to Pietermaritzburg police spokesperson Mthokozisi Ngobese, police entered the house and found the frantic woman with a rifle and a pistol both licensed to her husband. The woman was taken to hospital for mental observation by paramedics after she handed the guns to police. “The woman was not arrested and no case has been opened.”
