Durban - Armed robbers made off with boxes of money after a cash-in-transit heist at a petrol station in Greenwood Park, Durban, on Monday morning.

Officers held a cordon at the scene at the Engen on North Coast Road while detectives scoured the forecourt for evidence.

An armoured car used to transport money bore the marks of a gun battle.

Police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said a gang of five men, armed with rifles, had accosted a security officer who was walking out of the building.

“We can confirm that Greenwood Police Station is investigating a case of armed robbery which happened at Engen Garage in North Coast Road this morning,” he said.

“It is alleged that at about 9am, security guards went to the garage to collect cash when they were approached by five suspects at gunpoint. They robbed them of an undisclosed amount of cash and fled the scene in a White VW Polo and black Toyota Run X vehicle,” he said.

Crisis Medical spokesperson Kyle van Reenen said it was remarkable that no one sustained any injuries in the incident.
