Port Elizabeth - A group of “portly, well-dressed” churchgoers are leaving churches in the Friendly City with the word of God in their hearts and fellow congregants’ handbags in their hands, Netwerk24 reported.

“The handbag thieves paid us a visit on Sunday and we understand they have been doing the rounds,” a member of Fountain Vineyard Christian Fellowship in Walmer warned on Facebook.

Other churches had also been targeted. The thieves paid a visit to a local hospital and allegedly made off with a cellphone.

“They even attend funeral services,” said a church minister who wanted to remain anonymous, told Netwerk24.

Lindie Barnard wrote on Facebook: “A lady told me a woman sat next to her at a funeral service and cried with us. She then went to the bathroom and didn’t return. And then the lady she was sitting next to realised her handbag was gone.”

Police spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu said two cases of theft during church services were reported in the Walmer area.

She warned churchgoers to keep their handbags close to them during services, or to lock their valuables away.

In 2014, another woman who disguised herself using different wigs targeted funeral services in Port Elizabeth to steal mourners’ handbags.
