Johannesburg - The DA wants Police Minister Nathi Nhleko to reconsider the appointment of former NPA integrity management unit head Prince Mokotedi as head of the Hawks in Gauteng, saying the decision was evidence of political interference.

DA MP Zakhele Mbhele said the announcement was yet another blow to credibility and integrity of the Hawks.

"This latest decision is further evidence that the Hawks have been compromised by political interference," he said in a statement.

"It is abundantly clear that positions at the Hawks are given to settle political IOUs rather than to individuals who have integrity and are fit and proper to carry out the vital mandate of the Hawks as the apex corruption-busting unit."

In June 2014, Mokotedi was suspended by the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) after a document on former prosecutor Glynnis Breytenbach was leaked to the media. Mokotedi has denied leaking it.

However, in August the same year, when the NPA handed him a formal charge sheet, he resigned.

Breytenbach left the NPA after she won a disciplinary case against her, and joined the DA ahead of the 2014 general elections.

Mbhele said the DA would write to Nhleko regarding Mokotedi's appointment.

He said Mokotedi's history did not inspire confidence in his ability to do the job with integrity.
