Johannesburg – The Hawks are investigating four Eastern Cape municipalities for alleged fraud and corruption.

Mnquma local municipality manager Sindile Tantsi was arrested on Valentine’s Day, the first of many arrests the Hawks were planning, spokesperson Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said on Wednesday.

They had their sights set on municipal officials in the Nelson Mandela Bay, Buffalo City Metro, OR Tambo, and Mnquma municipalities.

“We are hoping that this will serve as a deterrence. When it comes to issues of fraud and corruption in government, it must come to an end."

Tantsi was taken to a private hospital in Mthatha under police guard, after complaining of stomach cramps following his arrest.

Hawks head Berning Ntlemeza was considering setting up task teams in every province to focus on corruption in municipalities.
