Cape Town - A man has been arrested after perlemoen worth about R2m was found in his vehicle, Western Cape police said on Thursday.

Hawks officers stopped a Ford Ranger in Bothasig on Wednesday morning and found it loaded with "suspicious boxes", said Lieutenant Lloyd Ramovha.

The boxes contained several bags of abalone.

The vehicle had been impounded and the 37-year-old man arrested.

Ramovha said the man would appear in the Goodwood Magistrate’s Court later on Thursday.

The City of Cape Town made a similar bust on Wednesday afternoon.

Its marine unit acted on a tip-off and discovered abalone worth R1.2m in a long-distance bus.

The bus, with the 600kg haul, had been headed to Pretoria from Cape Town station.

Mayoral committee member for safety and security, JP Smith, said the contraband was found packed in 50 boxes, "right here under the noses of SAPS headquarters and the Civic Centre".

"We know that poached marine goods are exchanged for drugs and one must wonder how much drugs and guns have been transported into Cape Town, smuggled in the bottom of these buses," he alleged.

Smith called for the Hawks and police to investigate the bus company and its owners, saying he had also sent the information to Transport MEC Donald Grant "so they can withdraw their operating licenses".
