Durban - An elderly Durban woman has fired a swift riposte at a disabled man who accused her of racially charged verbal abuse, saying he had called her a "white cockroach" first.

On Thursday, News24 reported that Siyabonga Ndlovu, a disabled man with partial use of his legs, had accused a yet unnamed elderly woman of calling him a "kaffir" and a "black cockroach" during a verbal altercation over a disabled parking space at Eastman’s Spar.

Ndlovu, who spoke exclusively to News24, said that he had pulled into the disabled parking bay and was in the driver’s seat of his car when he heard a commotion, and alleged that Charlotte Manton, 73, had struck his car with her crutch.

A verbal exchange then ensued.

In the wake of the spat, Ndlovu had posted a picture of Manton on his Facebook page which was widely shared.

In the next step in the tit-for-tat exchange, Manton initially refused to comment when she was contacted by News24, insisting that she was "not interested".

When pressed to tell her side of the story, she said:"He was rude, he swore at me and he made racist remarks about me… He was told not to park there and he continued to do his own thing,” she said.

“I am 73-year-old woman… he was the one that called me a white cockroach first, so then I called him a black cockroach back, why would I start something like that," she said, before abruptly ending the phone call.
