He must stay in jail - murdered baby's mother

2016-03-02 13:48

Cape Town – Seeing her ex-boyfriend in the dock of the Athlone Magistrate’s Court brought back “terrible memories” of her baby daughter’s murder, Andisiwe Mnyani said on Wednesday.

“I looked at him and felt nothing, only anger. All I saw were flashbacks of what happened to Inganathi, and he didn’t even look remorseful,” she said shortly after Zukile Nakupi appeared on a charge of murder.

He abandoned his bail application, a move which Mnyani found fitting.

“He must stay in jail,” she told News24.

Nakupi was arrested four days after the seven-month-old’s murder on January 18.

He allegedly flung the baby against the ceiling, walls and prepaid electricity meter of her mother's Philippi home. The couple allegedly started arguing after she woke up to feed Inganathi in the early hours of the morning.

He allegedly jumped on Inganathi's body, despite attempts from her 7-year-old sister to protect the baby.

The infant died at the scene.

“It frustrates me that the investigation is still underway. If the police want information, they can come to me. They only came to take one statement. I have not been contacted by them again," Mnyani claimed.

The case was postponed to May 4.
