Stilfontein - Homeowners in Stilfontein in the North West got the surprise of their life on Friday night when they returned from work to find a newborn inside a plastic bag outside their house.

"[The homeowners] came home from work and when they got out of their vehicle they heard cries coming from nearby long grass," ER24 spokesperson Werner Vermaak said.

"They found the baby boy tied in a plastic bag, crying."

Paramedics were called around 18:30. They assessed the baby and discovered he could not have been more than a few hours old.

He appeared to be healthy, said Vermaak.

He was taken to the Klerksdorp General Hospital for further observation.
