Cape Town – Henri van Breda, 21, handed himself over to police on Monday afternoon more than a year after three members of his family were murdered.

It was believed he visited police to hand himself over in connection with the attack on his family.

A video emerged of Van Breda going to Stellenbosch police with someone who appeared to be his legal representative.

Martin van Breda, his wife Teresa and son Rudi were hacked to death with an axe at De Zalze golf estate in the early hours of Tuesday, January 27, 2015. Marli, sister of Henri, is the only other survivor of the attack. However, her injuries from the incident left her with retrograde amnesia.

Lieutenant Colonel Andre Traut said police investigations had led to the arrest of a man who had "handed himself over to the Stellenbosch police at 15:30".

He faced three counts of murder and one of attempted murder.

National Prosecuting Authority Western Cape spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila would not comment on whether there had been a decision to prosecute.

"We can only comment when a suspect goes to court," he said.

On Monday night attorney Lorinda van Niekerk said she was unavailable to speak to News24.

Van Breda is due to appear in court on Tuesday.
