Durban - Two lifeguards have been hailed as heroes after they saved a Pretoria man from drowning at Clarke Bay, near Ballito, on Tuesday.

IPSS Medical Rescue spokesperson Paul Herbst said the man was swimming in the surf when a rip current swept him out to sea in the late afternoon.

A member of the public alerted KwaDukuza municipality lifeguards.

“The two lifeguards, Xolani Ngubani and Ben Mthimkhulu, entered the water without hesitation to perform a 15 minute long rescue to pull the man back onto the beach. They did so without regard for their own safety and had it not been for them, the outcome of this incident may have been tragic,” Herbst said.

The man was unhurt.

“We caution all beachgoers go swim at protected beaches,” Herbst said.
