Johannesburg - As the Easter weekend drew to a close, traffic volumes on some of the country's major highways on Monday morning increased as holiday makers made their way home.

Road Traffic Management Corporation spokesperson Simon Zwane warned that the highways, especially coming out of Limpopo and KwaZulu-Natal were already busy.

"It's getting busy but we will maintain vigilance on the roads and we will try to assist motorists as much as we can, but we are asking that they play their part and assist us by being patient on the road," he said.

"It's not going to be a fast drive... we will all get home safely."

Zwane asked motorists to stick to the speed limit and take regular breaks.

Before 08:00 on Monday, the N3 Toll Concession on its Twitter page said more than 1 000 vehicles had passed through the Mooi Plaza toll gate heading northbound towards Johannesburg.
