Port Elizabeth – An alleged hijacker was patiently waiting for medical care at a hospital in Thornhill when one of his victims recognised him and had him arrested on Sunday morning, Netwerk24 reported.

Earlier that morning, two men asked a motorist for a ride to Loerie. Apart from the driver, another man and a woman were in the car. The two attackers forced the driver into the back seat at gunpoint.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Majola Nkohli said the woman jumped out of the car and was shot in the leg as she tried to run away. One of the hijackers got out, threw her over his shoulder and put her back in the car.

They set off in the direction of Port Elizabeth. The driver tried to fight back and in the struggle for the gun, shot one of the hijackers in the shoulder.

The other hijacker pulled over and shot the man, who died on the scene. The two passengers then escaped on foot.

The wounded attacker went to hospital to get his shoulder treated – the same hospital where his two alleged victims had gone.

"The man recognised the alleged hijacker immediately and the police arrested him," Nkohli told Netwerk24.

His accomplice was still at large.
