Durban – A KwaZulu-Natal woman was shot after she refused to hand over her car keys in an attempted robbery on Saturday morning, paramedics said.

ER24 spokesperson, Annine Dormehl, said advanced life support had to be used after the woman was accosted at the Msunduzi River in Pietermaritzburg.

Apparently the woman and her mother were sitting near the river when a gun-wielding man approached them and asked for the keys to the vehicle.

When the woman resisted, the man shot her in the right side of her abdomen.

Paramedics arrived at the scene just before 10:00 and stabilised the woman before taking her to Mediclinic in Pietermaritzburg.

Police are investigating.
