Durban – A businessman who was allegedly fooled into thinking he was ordering a hit on his business partner for a R34 million insurance pay-out would apply for bail next month.

Dain Neveling, 34, appeared in the Durban Magistrate's Court on Thursday on charges of conspiracy to commit murder and possession of an unlicensed firearm.

He would remain in custody until his bail application on February 4.

Hawks spokesperson Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi previously said Neveling allegedly hired someone to help him find a hitman to kill his business partner.

In a sting operation, an undercover police officer approached the middleman Neveling allegedly hired and presented himself as a hitman.

Investigators staged the hit on the intended victim, and within 30 minutes, R10 000 was paid for the crime.

The suspect was arrested and allegedly led the Hawks to the home of his boss, Neveling.

The businessman was allegedly found in possession of an unlicensed 9mm black HK pistol with 26 rounds of ammunition.

Mulaudzi previously said it was not the first time Neveling had allegedly tried to have his business partner killed.

In July 2015, the business partner was apparently followed from a conference in Drummond to his home, where he was shot several times in what appeared to have been a failed hijacking.
