Durban – The Nquthu teacher who allegedly filmed himself having sex with his pupils will undergo an HIV test, the KwaZulu-Natal education department said on Monday.

His alleged victims would also be tested and put on ARVs, spokesperson Muzi Mahlambi said.

“We want early detection so that there can be early intervention. We are in possession of three videos with three different victims.”

Video footage allegedly showed the teacher having unprotected sex with three of his victims.

The teacher has been charged with two counts of sexual grooming, two of rape, and one of sexual assault, provincial National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Natasha Kara previously said. He appeared in the Nongoma Magistrate’s Court last Tuesday. The case was postponed to September 29. He was released on bail of R1000.

After an investigation, the department suspended four more teachers at the school for also allegedly having sex with pupils.

The KwaZulu-Natal government’s executive council said it had mandated the education and health departments to ensure the pupils were given ARVs as a precaution.

“The council stated that efforts will also be made to ensure that the alleged perpetrator is tested for HIV and Aids,” the council said in a statement.

Mahlambi said between June and September, the department dismissed 12 teachers across the province for allegedly sexually assaulting pupils.
