Johannesburg – The SACP on Friday condemned state security agencies being dragged into ANC infighting.

The security cluster should be concerned about the well-being of all South Africans, and not pursue political objectives on behalf of certain groups, SACP deputy general secretary Solly Mapaila told reporters following the party’s two-day central executive committee meeting.

The party was worried about the increasing politicisation of, and corruption in, state security agencies.

Various institutions were being used to persecute individuals. Mapaila referred to the aborted prosecution of Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan on fraud charges, and said the party had defended him.

Independent Police Investigative Directorate head Robert McBride was in a similar situation. He had endured countless court battles to retain his job. On Tuesday, Gauteng Hawks head Prince Mokotedi opened a case of conspiracy to commit murder, treason, and espionage against him.

“It’s continuing again, this abuse of legitimate government offices to pursue individuals you differ with. We can’t have impunity in law like that.”

If it continued unchallenged, it would plunge South Africa into crisis.
