Durban - A man and his son were lucky to emerge from a home invasion unscathed after armed men forced their way into their Westville home on Tuesday.

Blue Security operations manager Brian Jackson said three armed men entered the property and initially tried to force open the front door of their Roberts Place home just after 05:00.

"The resident saw one of the robbers at the front door and ran to his bedroom to hide. The bedroom windows were open and the other two gang members, who were standing outside, pointed a firearm through the window and ordered the resident to open up," Jackson said.

"He complied and the men fled in his vehicle with jewellery, cellphones, firearms and laptops."

Jackson advised residents to ensure that outside security systems such as electric fences and beams remained armed in the early morning. This is a prime time for housebreakings.

"If you do find yourself confronted by an intruder, it is vital to remain calm and to not look directly at the suspects.

"It is safer to comply with their requests quickly, and not to frustrate them or make them nervous. The longer a gang remains on your property the greater the chance there is of being assaulted and injured," he said.
