Durban - Tactical police have been deployed to the Westville Prison in Durban on Tuesday after an official locked himself in the armoury and threatened to take his own life.

- Are you there? Send us your eyewitness accounts and photos.

Sources within the police and the Department of Correctional Services confirmed that the allegedly suicidal warder had locked himself in a walk-in safe in the prison's Medium A Section.

"The police are all over the show here and [he] is inside the arsenal. We keep all the handguns and assault rifles inside there," a DCS warder told News24.

It is understood that members of the police's elite Special Task Force are standing by at the prison.

Police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane confirmed that officers had responded to the scene.

This is a developing story.

- An earlier version of this story stated that the warder was a woman. The Department of Correctional Services later confirmed that a male prison official had locked himself in the armoury.
