Durban – An alleged housebreaking suspect died after he fell down a cliff while fleeing from police and security guards on Tuesday at Greenvale Village Estate in Hillcrest, west of Durban, police said.

Colonel Thembeka Mbhele said it was alleged that the deceased had attempted to break into a house at about 07:00 on Tuesday but fled after he was spotted by security guards.

"He then fell down the cliff and succumbed to his injuries. He was declared dead on the scene," said Mbhele.

She said the body of the unknown male was recovered from the cliff by the police's search and rescue team.

"Hillcrest police are investigating an inquest and circumstances around the incident," she said.
