Johannesburg – Gauteng police have launched a manhunt for a group of more than 10 gunmen who held up staff and clients at Vanderbijlpark Emerald Resort and Casino on Sunday evening.

Police spokesperson Captain Mavela Masondo said the robbery happened at around 22:00 on Monday when the group stormed the casino and stole a substantial amount of money.

Masondo said the group opened fire on police when officers arrived at the scene.

Police returned fire.

One of the suspects was killed.

ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said paramedics found the body of the man lying outside the entrance.

He was declared dead on the scene.

Vehicles abandoned

Meiring said five others were injured during the armed robbery.

He said two people were found in a clinic at the casino, while three others were found waiting at reception.

"Two of the injured were security guards, both men. They were assessed and found to have sustained moderate gunshot wounds. The three other patients were found to have been assaulted, with only minor injuries," Meiring said.

Paramedics treated the patients and transported them to nearby hospitals.

Masondo said the suspects escaped in several vehicles, three of which were later found abandoned not far from the crime scene.
