“My friend challenged me and I can’t resist a challenge,” says Johan Etzebeth, who drove his green Volkswagen Citi Golf into the sea at Shelly Beach, KwaZulu-Natal.

Johan’s daring deed went viral after CCTV footage emerged of his little green car braving the waves.

YOU spoke to Johan, who said he and his friend are both “war veterans” and so enjoy challenging each other.

Johan is a pensioner who lives in St Michael’s on Sea on the KwaZulu-Natal coast. He told his wife, Lida, about his plans with the car 30 minutes before he did it.

“I couldn’t believe it,” Lida says.

“My friend said if I drove my car into the ocean by Monday 22 July at 1pm, he’d give me his white Citi Golf,” Johan explains.

Johan says his green Golf was 23 years old and the white Golf he was set to gain, is only 13 years old.

He’d considered driving the car into the sea off a bridge. “But I still have a lot of life in me and I’m not ready to die just yet,” he chuckles.

But the moment he drove into the ocean he realised it was no joke.

“It felt as if I was driving into a wall,” he says.

“Johan clung to the green car’s steering wheel as if he was in love with it,” says the friend who challenged Johan, but doesn’t want to be named.

“It was time for that car to go,” the friend says. “I was there and saw him do it. I just held his wallet and shirt.”

After his drive into the ocean, the car had to be towed from the sea. Johan sold the car to the workers of the towing company for R500.
