Cape Town - Capetonian Teegan Griffiths, who got seven As for her Independent Examinations Board matric finals, puts her success down to good time management and no procrastinating.

"I don't have distractions, and I make sure I know everything," says the friendly Reddam House Constantia pupil.

Speaking ahead of the release of her results, she did not want to say how she thought she had done in case she jinxed it.

Bursting with pride, her father Gareth told News24 that his daughter aced the tough September exams, bringing home reports with 98s and 99s.

"She got the dux this year," he says proudly of his daughter.

Her name popped up regularly in school debating team results and for doing well in Olympiades.

"She's worked incredibly hard. She's got amazing natural aptitude and a high IQ, but also just... application. She is also very caring and friendly and popular with her friends."

But when Teegan is studying for exams she is so committed that the family can't even drag her away to the local burger place.

Gareth Griffiths modestly pays tribute to his wife Brigitte, a human resources manager who "went out of her way" to give Teegan and her sister Daniela - now studying actuarial science - everything they would need for their education.

She found educational programmes for the girls to help them with their learning, and how to transfer information.

'My mom never forced me do anything'

The family also spends a lot of time outdoors in nature, which Gareth says is the perfect opportunity to explain how things work.

"My mom never forced me do anything. I just did it," says Teegan who got As for: Afrikaans first additional language; English home language; geography; history; life orientation (portfolio); mathematics, and physical sciences.

Another secret to success is her love of reading, which she does in her spare time, along with playing the violin.
She is classically trained, but hopes to dabble in some folk fiddling, which she loves. And, like other pupils her age, she loves going out with her friends.

To celebrate her results, she said she would probably go out with friends for dinner.

She already has a conditional acceptance at the University of Cape Town, with final approval dependent on her marks, and although she has been accepted at the University of Utrecht already, the expense is likely to keep her close to home.

She hopes to do a Bachelor of Science, with chemical engineering, because she loves learning about new things and wants to go into research eventually.

Gareth also paid tribute to the school Teegan attended.

"It has a nice vibe - enlightening and positive and it focuses on school work, as well as on encouraging pupils to do what they are interested in doing."
