"I didn't start working hard in matric or in Grade 10. It has always been a goal and I have been preparing since I was in Grade 1. I made sure I was in consistent in my work and I was diligent and worked hard in every single assignment, and prepared for tests," Rahman said.

The past year was extremely tough for Rahman and she sacrificed a lot to ensure she got the results she wanted.

"When everyone else was having a good time out on a Friday evening, I was sitting at home working and it paid off."

Rahman's highest mark was 96%. Her lowest mark was 85%, for equine studies. She planned on rewarding herself with a well-deserved skiing trip to France.

She planned to study actuarial science at the University of Pretoria next year. She wanted to get her Grade 8 qualification - the highest grade - in flute playing and join an orchestra.

She advised those who did not do well this year not to become disheartened.

"They must persevere, they shouldn't give up. They should stay motivated and try harder next year."
