2016 municipal elections: Everything you need to know...

2016-04-10 13:26

This weekend is the last voter registration weekend; here's everything you need to know about the upcoming local government elections.WATCH

Pietermaritzburg - For those who did not manage to register to vote over the past final voter registration weekend, all hope is not lost.

KwaZulu-Natal electoral officer Mawethu Mosery said after a “very successful” voters’ registration weekend, those who have still not managed to register to vote for the upcoming elections on August 3, can still register at local municipal offices up until proclamation day.

“The minister of Local Government has yet to announce the proclamation date. Up until then those who have not registered to vote may still take their IDs to municipal offices as you would for registration weekend,” he said.

Mosery said registration for voting went very well over the weekend, with some voting registration offices open until 10 pm last night.

“Home Affairs offices were also open over the weekend for people to be able to get IDs and temporary IDs to register to vote. We also had a very good voter turn-out at registration stations across the province,” he said.

Meanwhile, nine voting stations — all in the Vhembe area in Limpopo — had not opened.

Last ditch engagements were underway between the Electoral Commission, community leaders and security forces to open the last nine voting stations to allow all residents the opportunity to register for the upcoming elections.

22 608 voting stations throughout the country reported open and operating smoothly.

Early indications of voter turn-out captured from about 70 percent of stations showed that over 1,2 million voters visited voting stations over the weekend to register, re-register at new voting stations or re-register and provide updated address details.
