Johannesburg - A group of illegal miners have been trapped underground in Langlaagte, police said on Saturday.

It is believed that a group of illegal miners went underground on Wednesday morning, without returning, Captain Kay Makhubela said.

"When they did not return, a group of 16 family members went down to look for them. Only eight returned," Makhubela said.

He said another eight people went down on Saturday morning in search of the missing miners, however, only four people returned.

Makhubela could not confirm the exact number of people trapped.

"We have an established a rescue team to look for the missing miners on Sunday morning. Only then will we know the exact number," he said.
