Inchanga prayer day postponed for further peace talks

Durban – A prayer day, scheduled to take place in Inchanga on Thursday, has been postponed, the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Community Safety said on Wednesday.

Spokesperson Kwanele Ncalane said the prayer meeting, which was meant to assist in finding a solution to the ongoing political conflict in the area, had been postponed at the community's request.

"The affected community resolved last night [Tuesday night] that they need more time to engage in current talks to find a lasting solution to the challenges in Inchanga, and that the prayer meeting should be delayed to allow for these talks to carry on," Ncalane said.

There were simmering tensions in the area in the lead up to the August 3 local government elections.

Shortly after the elections, SACP member Nontsikelelo Blose, 40, was shot dead at a tavern in Fredville. ANC member Xolani Ngcobo was also shot and stoned to death the following Monday morning, apparently in a revenge attack.

He was buried on the same day as Blose.

Four suspects appeared in the Camperdown Magistrate's Court on Thursday in connection with Blose murder.

Ward 4 councillor Malombo Nxumalo, a relative of former mayor James Nxumalo who lives in the area, previously told News24 that Blose was killed because she was due to testify against those accused of killing Phillip Dlamini, 69.

The pensioner and Bongani Hlatshwayo, 38, were killed during a public SACP meeting at the KwaNdokweni sportsground in Inchanga on Sunday, January 24.

The murders deepened divisions between the ANC and the SACP in the area.

The latest murders brought to 15 the number of people killed in the province in the last few months. The killings were believed to have been politically motivated.
