Increase in independent candidates contesting elections - IEC

Pretoria - The Electoral Commission of SA (IEC) said on Wednesday that it had noted an increase in the number of independent candidates contesting the upcoming local government elections.

About 970 independent candidates would contest the elections on August 3, deputy chairperson Terry Tselane said.

The IEC was still validating candidate nominatons, and there could be 1 000 independents once the process had been completed.

More than 66 000 candidates had been captured as part of the nomination submission process.

Tselane said they were encouraged by the fact that half of those names were submitted electronically, using the IEC’s new online candidate nomination system.

"Political parties and independent candidates will informed by Monday, June 13, of any outstanding documentation and will have one week to rectify any non-compliance with the administrative requirements for nomination.

"The final issuing of certificates to contesting parties and candidates will take place in July, after which the printing of ballot papers will begin," he said.

Tselane said there were 4 649 unique ballot papers for the municipal elections.
