Johannesburg – The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) on Wednesday confirmed that it was investigating allegations of assault against police who were involved in an altercation with foreign nationals in Vanderbijlpark.

IPID spokesperson Moses Dlamini said: "The victims opened cases of assault against the police. We are not sure who was involved, that is why we are investigating."

Dlamini was referring to an incident that occurred last week Tuesday when, according to Police Minister Fikile Mbalula, the police's K9 unit went to a well-known drug dealer's house.

News24 previously reported that when the police went inside the house they found four occupants and one deceased, of Nigerian nationality.

Mbalula's spokesperson Vuyo Mhaga, in a statement said it was alleged that one Nigerian man came to the scene and started attacking the police with broken bottles, resulting in six police officers being seriously injured.

Mbalula condemned the attack on the police saying: "Police officers represent the state. Undermining of police is equivalent to undermining the authority of the state. I am warning these thugs to desist [from] undermining our police."
